There is also, most engagingly, the annual “Great Dragon Hunt”, which takes participants all over Venice – and across the Grand Canal in a gondola – in search of paintings and reliefs of St George and the dragon. Success is rewarded with a “fine Venetian certificate recording your achievement”.


In 2008 English Heritage commissioned Brian Patten to write a poem for St George’s Day:

The True Dragon

St George was out walking
He met a dragon on a hill,
It was wise and wonderful
Too glorious to kill
